In fact, one of the ancient names for Japan was Akitsushima (literally, island of the dragonflies). They feature frequently in battle armour from the Sengoku period, as well as in traditional Japanese fabric designs. (I understand that in Western cultures, they are largely considered unlucky and even pests.) They've been celebrated in Japanese culture since they eat insects that are harmful to crops, are persistent and skilled hunters, and are able to fly very quickly. I have no idea if Mike or the rest of the guys knew about this symbolism and whether the link was intentional, but in Japanese culture, dragonflies are considered very lucky. But hey, I'm just going to talk about it again because I think it's relevant here and hopefully interesting.) Although we have our moments where we want to play something that's just brutally loud and Chester's screaming his brains out, we're the same band that's going to write "My December" or sing something softer. It's about the hardness with the softness. Even on the first Linkin Park record, Hybrid Theory, that's what the soldier with the dragonfly wings on the cover was all about. The art style was largely influenced by stencil graffiti, including early works by Banksy. The result was a winged-soldier which Shinoda illustrated himself.
