In fact, one of the ancient names for Japan was Akitsushima (literally, island of the dragonflies). They feature frequently in battle armour from the Sengoku period, as well as in traditional Japanese fabric designs. (I understand that in Western cultures, they are largely considered unlucky and even pests.) They've been celebrated in Japanese culture since they eat insects that are harmful to crops, are persistent and skilled hunters, and are able to fly very quickly. I have no idea if Mike or the rest of the guys knew about this symbolism and whether the link was intentional, but in Japanese culture, dragonflies are considered very lucky. But hey, I'm just going to talk about it again because I think it's relevant here and hopefully interesting.) (Just to preface this, I think I might have talked about this same thing in an earlier comment in this subreddit some time back. That is kind of our newer understanding of the hybrid rather than just rap and rock. I sort of said to him that we're kind of a mix of heavy and delicate elements at the same time. We had come up with a logo and basic idea but we needed an image for the cover. The basic graphics for the band were done by myself and Frank Maddocks. We could get and we liked that people could get to it and remember it. We actually wanted Linkin Park because we could get the web site.
We had a little bit of a legal hassle with the name Hybrid Theory so we decided to change it to avoid the whole thing. It's funny because the name of the band used to be Hybrid Theory. Some people get turned off by one or the other, and we're okay with that. Both come naturally to us, and we love to do both. Although we have our moments where we want to play something that's just brutally loud and Chester's screaming his brains out, we're the same band that's going to write "My December" or sing something softer. It's about the hardness with the softness. Even on the first Linkin Park record, Hybrid Theory, that's what the soldier with the dragonfly wings on the cover was all about. Was that integral to the score for The Raid: Redemption?Īs evidenced by the stuff we've done with Linkin Park over the years, that's just been something I have a personal obsession with. You strike a balance between the organic piano and string sounds and the electronic elements.
Both are interviews with Mike, here you go: I am the main editor of the Hybrid Theory article on Wikipedia in Spanish, so I had saved some sources about this topic. I'll be very greatful for official explanations from interviews, if there are any. The cover of Reanimation, a remix album of Hybrid Theory, features a robotic version of the soldier that is similar in appearance to a mobile suit Gundam, a line of robotic combat machines that are featured in the popular Gundam Wing anime series. A different version of the soldier can be seen on some of the album's singles. The cover (Hybrid Theory) also features scrambled lyrics of the album's songs within the background, though the lyrics of "One Step Closer" are the most prominent. According to Chester Bennington, the idea of the soldier with dragonfly wings was to describe the blending of hard and soft musical elements by the use of the jaded looks of the soldier and frail touches of the wings. The art style was largely influenced by stencil graffiti, including early works by Banksy. The result was a winged-soldier which Shinoda illustrated himself.
